Hanuman Chalisa: A 7-Year Calligraphy Project

The Hanuman Chalisa is the studio’s longest single calligraphy project — a hand-lettered edition of the forty verses, drawn rather than typeset, that took roughly seven years from first stroke to finished book.

Every doha and chaupai sits in a hand-drawn letterform. Margins, headers, and ornament have been built around the verses rather than imposed on them. The text was written, paused, redrawn, paused again, set aside through several life chapters, and finally completed and bound. The finished edition is meant to read at the pace at which it was written — slowly, with attention to each character.

The edition has travelled in ways the studio could not have planned. It has been gifted by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to a visiting foreign delegation, and copies have gone out to readers across India and a few overseas. It is part of a small family of devotional calligraphy work from the studio that also includes the Durga Chalisa edition.

The book is a one-off in spirit but printed in a small edition so that it can reach more hands than a single original ever could. The cover, paper choice, and trim have all been thought through to keep the calligraphy at the centre rather than crowding it.
